Ultimate Safari Packing Guide: What Experienced Travelers Bring
Kenya

After 22 years of guiding, I've developed strong opinions about safari packing. Most first-timers bring too much. Experienced safari travelers bring exactly what they need—and nothing else. Here's my definitive packing guide.

The Golden Rule

Soft-sided duffels only. Hard suitcases don't fit in small aircraft cargo holds. 15-20kg per person is the limit on safari flights. Pack for a week and launder clothes mid-safari.

Essential Clothing

Neutral Colors

  • • 4 quick-dry t-shirts
  • • 2 long-sleeve shirts
  • • 2 pairs safari pants
  • • 1 fleece or sweater
  • • 1 lightweight jacket

Morning & Evening

  • • Warm fleece (essential)
  • • Windproof jacket
  • • Scarf or buff
  • • Warm hat
  • • Gloves for July-August

Avoid

  • • Blue or black clothing
  • • Camouflage (illegal)
  • • Denim (heavy, slow-drying)
  • • White (shows dirt instantly)

Gear That Matters

Bring These

  • • Headlamp with red light
  • • Quality binoculars (8x42 ideal)
  • • Reusable water bottle
  • • Power bank
  • • Earplugs (for light sleepers)
  • • Lip balm with SPF

Leave Behind

  • • Drones (restricted in parks)
  • • Expensive jewelry
  • • Hair dryer (camps provide)
  • • Full-size toiletries
  • • Multiple devices per person

Tom's Secret Weapon

"A buff. Not just for dust—wet it in the morning, wear it around your neck. Cools you down for hours in hot afternoon game drives. Also works as eye mask, headband, emergency towel. I never guide without one."
